Balancing Homeschooling and Working at Home by Guest Poster Michelle Shaeffer

As a new WAHM and new homeschooler I recognise that one of the biggest challenges facing WAHMs who homeschool is time management and organisation. There are only 24 hours in any one day and so many tasks to juggle.

Michelle Shaeffer shares with us her ideas on how to balance working at home and homeschooling.

Balancing Homeschooling and Working at Home
By Michelle Shaeffer

A common reason for moms to homeschool their children and work from home is that the at-home lifestyle appeals to them. It sounds like an ideal situation – you’re home, the kids are at home, and everyone’s happy.

But juggling a home business with homeschooling usually doesn’t look as peaceful as it might sound. In fact, this is a more likely scenario:

You’ve planned to do a math lesson with your children at 9 am. Since you have a few minutes of peace while the kids are finishing breakfast, you decide to fit in a quick email check.

There’s an email from a prospective client, who wants a proposal from you right away, for a juicy contract. There’s still 20 minutes before you had planned to start your school day, so you start to reply.

Well, one thing leads to another… the computer is slower than usual, someone spills a bowl of cereal in the kitchen, the cat decides to throw up on the couch, and by the time your email is sent, it’s an hour later.

Still, not bad, you tell yourself, and you settle down with the kids to begin their lesson.

Halfway through the first page of math problems, you hear a new email coming in. Thinking it might be about the email you just sent, you tell the kids, “I’ll be right back.”

Now he wants to talk to you over the phone. Can you call him as soon as you get this email? You pick up the phone and start dialing.

In the next room, the kids are frustrated with the math problems and starting to throw pencils and erasers at each other. While the phone’s ringing, you call out to them to quiet down and just read a book instead.

Your call is answered, but it’s a little hard to hear the reply over the fighting that has ensued. Your children have suddenly decided they have to read the very same book, at the same time. Their arguing has gotten the dog riled up, and now he’s barking too.

You mumble something about needing to call back later, apologize, and hang up the phone. By the time you get the dog outside, the kids calmed down enough to focus on their lesson, it’s time for lunch and you need a nap.

There are a few steps you can do to be sure your days don’t end up looking like this.

Schedule time for work and time for school. When it’s time for school, give your kids 100% of your attention. Then when it’s time for you to work, give 100% of your attention to your business. Problems arise when you try to multi-task because you’re won’t be able to give proper attention to either your kids or your business.

Teach your children how to work independently. There will be times when you won’t be available for your kids because of your business. So, it’s important to give your kids opportunities to learn to work independently. If you have a phone call that goes long, or if you are busy with an important project, the school day won’t automatically fall apart. Even young children can work independently for a short time.

Enlist the help of other homeschooling parents. See if you can work out a childcare exchange, for times when you need the kids out of the house. Then you can return the favor when they need help.

Be flexible. No matter how well you plan your day, always expect the unexpected. Organize your day as best as you can, but be willing to change your schedule at a moment’s notice.

Private Label Resell Rights:  Introduction

One way to make money as a freelancer working at home is to write articles, ebooks and create audio and video packages. Creating your own products can be daunting for a beginner. It is also time consuming as you have to think of ideas, research, draft, rewrite, publish and market.

Private Label Resell products (“PLR”) can help you to create your own products more quickly or they can simply be the products you sell. You can purchase PLR products such as ebooks, articles and software packages or there are many places where you can get PLR resources such as articles for free. PLR products will come with a license detailing your rights and it is essential that you check these rights as they will inform you as to what exactly you can do with the products.

Some products come with full rights and you can use the product in any way you wish, including adapting and putting your name to them. Other products allow you to use the product on your own website, as an online course or as a series of emails or blog posts. Other packages allow you to give the products away freely but not to sell them for financial gain.

Tomorrow we will look at opportunities for using PLR products to earn money as a freelance WAHM.

WAHMumpreneur – New Website Coming Soon!

The internet makes the world a smaller place

The internet makes the world a smaller place

The US is so far ahead of us in terms of using the internet, supporting each other, resources and the list goes on and on… Whatever I decide to look into I always find American, Canadian or even Australian resources more than ones from the UK. Now that isn’t a bad thing but I do think that it is a shame for us in the UK that we don’t seem to have as many support networks etc.

I have met so many wonderful women from around the world who have devoted time and energy to creating sites, blogs, resources, support networks and more, men too (of course). I don’t know that I can compete (as yet) with these wonderful people but I’d certainly like to have a go at helping others in the way that I’ve been helped. I have quite a few blogs that I’m involved in and niches that I’m interested in. However, one thing that has really been a focus in my mind for some time is the work at home mum, the freelancer and the mumpreneur (mompreneur in the US). Why a particular focus? Well, since I’m looking at no job come January I need to do something. I have skills and talents that I want to use in particular ways and I am doing so with increasing success. As part of that I’d love to help other WAHMs to negotiate their way into the WAH arena, to freelance and to become a mumpreneur. I’d love to help others showcase their talents, locate gigs, clients… So I feel that the best and next step forward for me is to create an actual website with its own domain etc.

With the money I earned from selling my article I’ve purchased hosting and got free domains included. The hosting comes with all sorts of goodies such as site designer etc. I shall be getting to grips with creating the site over the next couple of weeks and hopefully will be able to transfer the content from here to the site by the time it goes live.

This is your chance to have your say in the site and its contents prior to its release. It is meant to be a resource for you, to help and support you to become a mumpreneur and to earn a living as a WAHM. So what would you like to see or find there?

Leave a comment here on this blog or drop me a line at tigermadstanley@live.co.uk with your thoughts as to what you would most like to have on this brand new site for all WAHMs across the world. It’s a totally free resource for all WAHMs everywhere so I’d love it to be relevant.

Do you want resources? Articles? Giveaways? Interviews? Your own page to showcase your work and talents? A jobs page? Would a magazine (ezine) be useful to you? Help with keeping up with your home? Homeschooling help? Drop me a line here or at tigermadstanley@live.co.uk and I’ll be sure that this new site for WAHMumpreneurs is exactly what we need.

If you have an article or resource that you feel would suit the audience of this site please contact me. It will be great to help celebrate the work of WAHMs around the world. Let’s share our knowledge, skills, experience and friendship to ensure success for us all.

Useful Resource Recommendation

Essential for the Freelancer's Toolkit

Essential for the Freelancer's Toolkit

I love getting free gifts and I also love bargains. I’m really pleased to be able to recommend a resource today that will help anyone who is new to the freelancing world and unsure about all the techie terms that are bandied about hither and thither. It can be very confusing and detrimental to your ability to complete writing tasks or to win gigs if you aren’t sure of the terms. Today’s recommendation is for a glossary of all the technical terms and the best part is that it is so reasonably priced that it is really open to all to purchase.

The author is a pro-blogger and freelance writer with an easy to read style. Anne trained with Yaro Starak and so she really knows her stuff.

So if you want a really useful, easy to read and excellent value book to help begin your collection of resources to get your freelancing lifestyle going then click here.

Free On-line Resource – 3D Covers

We’ve all seen those professional looking cd covers, boxes and books. I expect that like me you’ve heard about people paying thousands for the graphics. Today I was sent a link to this free site, at least it was when I was there, that offers you the opportunity to create 3D boxes, cd covers, dvd covers, books and more using your own graphics. You can even choose your format for the download. Not sure what everyone else uses but if you’re on a strict or no budget like me then this is a real gift. Go and play – it’s so cool!

The Future is Here & From Tomorrow I am a WAHM & a Freelancer 100%

Celebrate the Positive

Celebrate the Positive

Well, here it is a momentous day. Today I was officially dismissed from my full-time job due to the fact that I ‘might be ill’ in the future’. Amazingly I am not shedding any tears or worrying over it. There will be an appeal. However, my positive state of mind is due to the fact that I am channelling my energies into my freelance work. This decision will give me the go ahead to funnel my talents into doing all those things that have been taken on in a part-time and haphazard manner.

From tomorrow I will have my routines in place, my targets and goals. My home will be organised, my freelance business and my home school. It is time to take control of my life and make my dreams turn into reality.

So two words stand out in my mind today: courage and hope. Please join me for this exciting and challenging journey. It’s a really exciting time and I’m looking forward to sharing some wonderful resources with you as well as to travel the road to success together.
